Art Review- "99 needles"

The piece of the artwork that I would like to share with you all is “Ninety-nine Needles” by Chengyao He. Chengyao He is one of the contemporary female artists in China and she is well-known for her performance art. Chengyao He grew up with pain and fear. Her mother was an unwed mum which is totally a taboo thing to do in the traditional Chinese society. Consequently, her mother was suffering from mental illness because of the overmuch pressure and gossip. She always walked around with her half-naked body and that her daughter, Chengyao He was teased by the others for having a strange mother. Later then, her family arranged her mother to do acupuncture to try to solve her mental problem. However, the mental illness didn't fade but the miserable memories of her mum wailing when inserting needles were always in Chengyao He’s mind. She has been very guilty for nothing she can be done to make her mum feel better.

Ninety-nine Needles” was created in 2002.  This artwork was specially made for her mother to try to understand the pain that her mum has undertook. She used her body as the medium of this artwork. She asked her friend who is a doctor of Oriental Medicine (O.M.D) to insert total 99 needles on her face and her body. Then she went to the corridor and take picture until her left hand started to bleed and finally she fainted. She used her own body to try to feel what her mother has gone through in person. Throughout this artwork, she can release herself from the guilty and wretched mindset and to understand her mother more. She used the physical pain to heal her mental incompleteness. More importantly, she actually wanted to point out a message that the public pressure and gossip still a very harmful weapon in such a developed generation and people should be responsible for they've said.

Performance Art has been growing since the 1970s in China and it was getting popular and interested by the other artists. However, the performance art in china still has so many constraints as China is a traditional society. Take the artwork by Chengyao He as an example to illustrate more. She was naked in many of her artworks and they were the controversy over the public. Most of them were negative comments and people judge the artworks harshly from totally none- artistic perspective.

Personally I do like this art work as I found braveness and acceptance in
Ninety-nine Needles”. I am sure there is not much people are encouraged and brave enough to be naked in public and share her deep feelings openly. But she did it by abandoning the judgment and comment. Furthermore, she was actually hated and scared of her mother when she was young as she thought her mother brought her great shame. However, she finally tried to understand and even used her own body to feel how hard it would be. There is one more point I like about the artwork which is the destructive impact from someone’s mouth. Wordings can be very harmful and we should not judge people by just simply knowing the tiny bit of the whole thing. You can still find the hater’s comments very easily on the internet but she never give up her way of doing art. Keep going the same way is never an easy task, not to mention the controversy. So I do like her artwork and insistence.

  2. From your post, I can see that Chengyao He is really a very brave artist. It is always hard to be a female artist in China as there are still loads of taboos which may hinder them to fully demonstrate what they want to show. However, Chengyao He was not afraid of "doing something wrong". Instead she just used the way she want, and she think is the best to illustrate her thoughts and ideas.

I think the idea and reason behind the birth of this art piece were very heart warming. She did it for both understanding her mother and herself, and also to show the world how harmful people's words can be and how those words may affect one's life.
Besides, I can see that art has the power to change someone's values towards love and life, and to heal one's wound. Chengyao He felt shame about her mother and also herself because of others' teases, however, through doing this performance art, she freed herself from the pressure. She started to understand her mother, be able to reveal her true self and neglect the negative and hurtful words from others. Art has really brought her a enormous positive change.

  3. The first word that comes to my mind after looking at the picture is “pain”. Of course after reading your analysis this is one of the central themes Chengyao He is trying to depict. Not only is she herself able to feel the physical trauma her mother went through, by looking at this piece audiences also get the same sense of feeling. It is this impact which makes this piece so successful, as the sense of pain audiences get when viewing the piece relates directly to the sense of mental pressure her mother had. After viewing this work, I agree with your view that words can be harmful and it is inappropriate for us to judge and criticize a person without knowing them in person hence "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all".

  4. To be honest, I was scared and felt her "99 needles" art work was disgusting when I first looked at it. To me, her expression was very extreme and scary, but not artistic and beautifully presented.

Until I finish reading her story, family history and inspiration that clearly mentioned in your review. Thanks to your detailed description, finally can I understand why the artist did that and I feel very different about her work now.

I am moved and deeply touched by her as she dedicated the work to her suffering mother and repented for her own helpness. I feel so sorry and empathetic when looking at her red and swollen body after receiving 99 needles. it is the physical and mental compensation. I strongly agree with you that she used her own body to try to feel what her mother has gone through in person. In other words, to feel what her loved one feel. How impressive it is!How brave she is!

In my opinion, I believe that art as therapy. Though it is only therapeutic only to the artist herself and the expression is very extreme, but it does provide food for thought. We should never judge a book by its cover, just like the people judge her mentally ill mother as strange monster and the viewer judge her as extreme, scary and disgusting with her "99 needles". There are always stories behind.

To sum up, I appreciate her attempt at therapy through art, healing wounds from inside out.

Moreover, I suggest you to mention or compare other body art artist with Chengyao He? How special or unique she is? Are there any Hong Kong artists specialized in body art too?

Also, I am interested to know what are the controversial issues concerning such body art?

Do you know that there is an art therapy association in Taiwan. Is it possible for Hong Kong? What do you think?

I post the link of that association here for your reference.
